Valencia inaugurated the spectacular "La Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias" (the City of Arts and Sciences) in 1997. The work of celebrated architect Santiago Calatrava, a native of Valencia, its last building was completed in 2005. It was one of the showiest trophies of Spain's massive debt-fueled building boom.
