There was nothing that served as a better reminder of why the shuttles were built in the first place than the periodic servicing missions the ships flew to the Hubble Space Telescope. The repairs were slow and unavoidably clumsy—like performing surgery while wearing catcher's mitts—and yet the crews saved the patient every time. The aged Hubble continues to thrive thanks to the care it received on missions like this one, in February 1997.
