Maiden Voyage
Discovery blasted off for the first time on Aug. 30, 1984, en route to a six-day stay in space. The picture was taken from a chase plane by NASA legend John Young, who flew in the Gemini, Apollo and shuttle programs—walking on the moon on Apollo 16 and commanding the first shuttle flight.
