Presidential Election, 1976
Peanuts were a common appearance in the 1976 general election, as former Georgia governor Jimmy Carter, who entered politics after building a successful business as a peanut farmer, faced Republican incumbent Gerald R. Ford. The pro-Carter button, left, meshes Carter's toothy grin with the form of a peanut under the slogan "The Grin Will Win"; the pro-Ford button at right shows the GOP elephant crushing a peanut, accompanied by the slogan "Don't Settle for Peanuts."
