Many Northerners supported emancipation causes, perhaps no group more than the Quakers. Photographs became popular fundraising items to support the work of the Freedmen's Bureau, which aided freed slaves in the early years of Reconstruction. This photograph, which was found in an album belonging to the Truman family, prominent Philadelphia area Friends, shows Wilson Chinn, who had been a slave in Louisiana, reading with three white children.
