L.A. artists frequently adapted manufacturing techniques from SoCal industries like surfboard, aircraft and motorcycle production. To learn how to produce this work, made with sprayed acrylic lacquer on the hood of a Chevrolet Corvair, the artist Judy Gerowitz — later known as Judy Chicago — enrolled in an eight-week course at an auto-body school.
