Tell Umm el-Amr, Palestinian Territory
Discovered just 12 years ago in the middle of the now blockaded Gaza Strip, Tell Umm el-Amr, also known as the monastery to Saint Hilarion, is possibly the biggest site of its kind in the region. A Roman-era pile, constructed at some point between the 5th and 7th centuries A.D., it's ripe for tourism and further archaeological study. But the ongoing stifling of Gaza by Israel's blockade and the intermittent bombings of the strip by Israeli helicopter gunships imperil the ruins.
