Once known as the Manufacturers Trust Company Building, the glass-paneled modernist cube in the heart of Manhattan was built in the 1950s to celebrate a new, transparent sort of capitalism — with even its bank vault on full display. But the building's interior was gutted in the summer of 2011 after it was taken over by a realty company that wanted to remodel the space.
