We Are What We Eat: Food and American Identity at the National Archives

Today much of the U.S. struggles with a tendency to eat too much; this 1940s food guide is a reminder that Americans often haven't had enough to eat. During World War II, rich, fatty butter was considered its own food group alongside vegetables, grains and dairy products. In addition to recommending servings from the seven official groups, the government also suggested that people "eat any other food you want." Dietary guidelines would not remain so permissive for long.
