Brent Humphreys for TIME

Liz McNally
A West Point graduate and Rhodes scholar who did a tour in Baghdad at the age of 24, McNally ran a platoon of military police officers and later became General David Petraeus' speech writer. Her service in the Army inspired her father, Dr. Richard Young, right, to join the Connecticut National Guard; both served combat tours in Iraq, as did Liz's husband John McNally.
