Walter Reed's Clinic
Named for the American military physician whose most famous discovery is that yellow fever is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, the Walter Reed Army Medical Center has served as the United States Army's flagship medical center for more than 100 years. Major Walter Reed, left, died in 1902. The photo on the right, taken in 1909 is believed to be the oldest known photo of the facility that will shut down in 2011.
