Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus

Rembrandt
Philadelphia Museum of Art, John G. Johnson Collection

Head of Christ, c. 1648-56
Altogether, seven small portrait heads of Christ were produced in Rembrandt's studio that we know of. How many of them were painted by Rembrandt himself and how many were the work of his studio assistants is an unsettled question, though even the works by his assistants would have been produced from the example of a likeness of Christ arrived at by the master or under his guidance.
