One Daring Dame
A sunbather points to a "You May Now Bathe Without Tops" sign to explain to a lifeguard why she's topless. It was a daring move in 1939, especially since the sign was probably meant for men, who were required to wear tops at most beaches in the early half of the century. Topless beaches for women are still rare — in the U.S., anyway.
