The Original Scotland Yard
Founded in 1829, London's Metropolitan Police has been known as Scotland Yard since early in its history. When Home Secretary Robert Peel called for the formation of a London police force, responsibility for its organization was entrusted to two officials who occupied a private house, one side of which opened onto a courtyard called the Great Scotland Yard, so-named because it had once been the site of a medieval palace which housed Scottish royalty. This engraving, published in 1897, gives a sense of what that Yard looked like in the 19th century.
