Twombly's art was slow to find favor in the U.S. As an expatriate, he worked far from the crucial artistic circles of New York. A Manhattan gallery show in 1964 got a particularly calamitous critical reaction. But he persevered, making art that looked like chalkmarks on a blackboard or rolling coils of pigment. His layered scribbles became more like irregular patterns, filling the canvas with rhythmic webs.
