Tiznit, 1953
In his 20s Twombly befriended two future greats of American art, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, who like him would carry their work into realms beyond the Abstract Expressionism that dominated the artworld at that time. He traveled in Italy and North Africa with Rauschenberg and at his friend's urging studied for a while at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, the legendary forcing ground of the postwar American avant garde.
