Kevorkian, 65 at the time, is seen in a booking photograph taken by Wayne County deputies following his 1993 arrest in Detroit. Kevorkian was tried a total of five times on assisted-suicide charges. Before his 1999 imprisonment, his verdicts were three acquittals and one mistrial, largely because Michigan had no law against assisting suicide. Also, Kevorkian argued that his patients took the final steps on their own in taking their lives. Legislators in Michigan outlawed suicide assistance in 1993.
