Kevorkian's attorney Geoffrey Fieger, left, gestures to his client in a Detroit court in 1993. After a judge increased his bond to $20,000 in an assisted-suicide case against him, Kevorkian refused to leave his chair and then went limp. Wayne County deputies eventually dragged him out of the courtroom. The retired pathologist was a theatrical character, comparing himself to figures like Gandhi and Martin Luther King and labeling his critics "hypocritical oafs." On one occasion, he appeared in court in a tricornered hat and powdered wig.
