Vietnam was basically one big conspiracy — man! — so of course this movie is about power struggles and treachery among a small group of infantrymen who are fighting and dying in the DMZ. While the film includes Sheen's breakout role and won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, Sheen didn't earn a nod for Best Actor — the second time a Vietnam film had burned him. Seven years earlier, Sheen's father Martin starred in (and suffered a heart attack during the making of) Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic Apocalypse Now, which the younger Sheen is obsessed with.
