The Shortcut: James Hopkins, 20, suffered from cerebral palsy and was deaf and mute. Yet he worked with a local basement waterproofer and spent most evenings at the Greater Grace Outreach Church, near his family's home in Baltimore, Md. Last July 1, taking his usual shortcut home from church, he was shot dead. Neither the gun nor the killer has been found. At the spot where he was killed, Hopkins is mourned by his mom, Celestine, and his brother Corey, 12.
