Making A Difference
The Peace Corps continues to address health, education, environmental and youth issues in 76 countries worldwide, and in its 50 years of existence the program has serviced 139 countries in total. Here, Peace Corps volunteer Peter DiCampo bandages a patient with Guinea worm disease at the Guinea Worm Case Containment Center in Wantugu, Northern Region, Ghana, in December 2006. The philosophy of the corps emphasizes empowering local populations to help themselves. By the time DiCampo left, the community had constructed its own fresh water system that pumps clean water from a distant underground source directly into the midst of the village. As of 2011, The Carter Center and the Ghanaian government have declared that Ghana is free of Guinea worm.
