The frustration of the young protesters had been growing for years, as the unwritten compact their parents' generation had made with President Ben Ali — economic opportunity in exchange for political freedoms — had come undone. Though Tunisia offers excellent educational opportunities, the job market had shrunk, a process accelerated by the slowdown of the global economy. Estimates suggest that 25% of the youths of Tunisia are unemployed.
