As the revolt hit the capital, President Ben Ali began to feel the pressure. He gave a hastily scheduled television address on January 13, promising to give in to some of the protesters' demands, like easing censorship. Meanwhile, in the streets, demonstrators clashed with security forces, who opened fire in downtown Tunis, killing an unknown number (The New York Times reported that "dozens" had been killed by January 13.) This photo shows rescue workers evacuate a victim of one of the shootings.
