Young Palestinians in the Age of the Wall

Growing up Palestinian in the Age of The Wall
Joachim Ladefoged / VII for TIME

Perspective
Construction of the 400-mile (644 km) Wall — a system of fences, barricades and checkpoints designed to reduce terrorism attacks on Israeli soil — began in earnest in 2003. It has done more than keep out suicide bombers; it has created a separation of the mind, such that an entire generation of Palestinians is coming of age without even knowing what Israelis look like, much less the land both sides claim as their own.
