Cinema is Born
Though many had experimented with moving pictures before, it was the aptly named Louis and Auguste Lumière who developed a system for projecting the images onto a big screen. In the mid-1890's the brothers showed shorts like the "Danse Serpentine", above, in theaters, providing audiences with a larger-than-life experience and making the "movies" into a group experience.
