Cast in Mud: Child Laborers
of Cairo

COLIN FINLAY / SABA

Finlay: This is at the top of the kiln where the fumes are the thickest. The boy is lifting the pots, which are very hot, and carrying them over to a truck. You can see some broken vases to the right side. He has to wade into the smoke to take out the vase. The black smoke comes from the rubber and the trash that they're burning — obviously it's not clean burning. Just being around these boys, you can tell that their health is quite poor. Some boys were coughing and the eyes of others looked damaged from the smoke.

Children who work in earthenware factories breathe in silica dust and toxic fumes, leading to early cases of bronchitis and asthma.
