Cast in Mud: Child Laborers
of Cairo

COLIN FINLAY / SABA

Finlay: The boy's hand is draped across the front of the bowl that he uses to carry mud in and out of the factory. The mud bowl seems like an extension of his body. It becomes one with his hands and the texture of the mud on his hands becomes one with the bricks behind him, which is what he and the children before him have done — created the bricks, created the foundation of where he works.

Child labor perpetuates a cycle of poverty. Working children miss education and their chances for better jobs and higher pay. Their children, in turn, are also likely to start working at a young age.
