Portrait of the Qianlong Emperor
A new exhibit, "The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City" showcases works commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor, the fourth emperor of the Qing Dynasty, which was established by the Manchus after they invaded China from the north in 1644. His reign, from 1735 to 1795, is the second longest in Chinese history. He commissioned many portraits of himself, including pictures showing him in full armor on horseback, hosting victory banquets and even as a Buddhist deity.
