The Daleys of Chicago
Interested in politics from the time he was a young boy, Richard J. Daley served in a variety of county and Illinois state positions before being elected mayor of Chicago in 1955. To win office, he defeated an incumbent in the Democratic primary, for which he brought his family, above, to the polling station. Son Richard M., 13 at the time and a future mayor himself, is in the center of the second row, standing in front of his mother Eleanor.
