Coming of Age in Ciudad Juarez

The Quinceañera
A traditional rite marking a girl's passage into young womanhood, the quinceañera is typically celebrated at 15 years of age. The event frequently includes extensive planning for an elaborate party. Paloma, who does not have the means to finance a party for herself, was chosen by the city to participate in a mass quinceañera, part of a program developed by Ciudad Juárez to give underprivileged girls a chance to experience the ritual. In this photo, accessories and party items purchased by Paloma's mother stand on a table in the family's house.
