Because tattoos are forbidden in Islamic culture — and part of the Marines' mission is to win over the hearts and minds of the local populace — the Marine Corps tries to limit what the men can do with their skin art. Tattoos on the head and neck are prohibited, and officers are limited to a maximum of four easily visible pieces.
