Hurricane Audrey, Texas and Louisiana, 1957
416 dead
Starting as a tropical depression in the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Audrey made landfall on the Texas-Louisiana border and pushed northeast across the Tennessee border before weakening over the Ohio Valley. Audrey victims had no warning that the storm was coming, as news reports had advised residents that the storm would not make landfall for four days, but that very night, Audrey struck the southern coast with 145-m.p.h. (235 km/h) winds.
