From Pixels to Projectors: Hollywood's Video-Game Movies

Hollywood's Video-Game Movies

Super Mario Bros., 1993
It should come as no surprise that when video games shifted from subculture to pop culture, Hollywood would try to turn their pixelated entertainment counterparts into full-fledged feature films. The first of these, 1993's Super Mario Bros., starring Bob Hoskins, above, as Mario, and John Leguizamo as Luigi, did not have much story from the original game to extrapolate from, so Hollywood took many creative liberties with the plumber brothers. The result? A movie about a dark, dystopian world that shared a commonality with the game in name only. (Seriously. Portraying Toad as a reptile? Come on.)
