Broadway's Hits and Misses of the Spring
A Boost from the Tonys
The Tony nominations are out, giving a lot of Broadway shows hope for a major boost as the summer tourist season approaches. The biggest beneficiary is probably Fela!, the Afrobeat musical that garnered 11 nominations and looks to be the prohibitive favorite for Best Musical. It's an entertaining show and a worthy choice, though I feel bad for two other shows that were given short shrift by the nominators: Twyla Tharp's dance musical Come Fly Away (snubbed for a Best Musical nomination) and Green Day's gussied-up rock concert American Idiot (which did manage a Best Musical nod but not much else). Mostly, though, it struck me as a disappointing season, particularly among shows that clamored to open in the last few weeks before the official end of the season. Here's a look at some of the late-arriving hits and (more often) misses.
