Securing Loose Nukes in Chile

Securing Loose Nukes in Chile
Enrique Siques for TIME

Loaded Cask
The NNSA team and members of the Chilean Nuclear Energy Commission prepare a container of HEU for transport. HEU must be stored and shipped in certain geometrical configurations — long, flat sheets, for instance — so that it won't spontaneously start a nuclear chain reaction, spewing out heat and radioactive by-products. This photograph was taken 12 hours before the earthquake struck.
