Real Life Rock Bands on Screen

When Hollywood Rocks
The Runaways is the latest cinematic effort to bring the story of a real life rock band to the big screen
Samuel Goldwyn Films / Everett

Sid and Nancy, 1986
The punk rock love affair of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen lay at the center of this British film. The story traces Sid's rise to fame with the notorious Pistols and his and Nancy's descent into a drug addiction that spins recklessly out of control. Former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten, openly criticized director Alex Cox for not consulting him in the making of the movie. In his autobiography, Lydon called the movie "the lowest form of life", though the soundtrack does not contain any tracks by him or the Sex Pistols.
