Robert Gates' Career in Government

Back in Washington
Mired in controversy over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld resigned his position in 2006 and President George W. Bush asked Gates to head the Department of Defense. Gates reluctantly agreed and went on to oversee a troop surge in Iraq, a mandatory increase in length of tour duties and the fallout of the Walter Reed hospital scandal.
