The hacker attacks resulted in the theft of intellectual property as well as assaults on the Gmail accounts of Chinese human-rights advocates, according to Google. The identities and motivations of the hackers remain uncertain. Wenqi Gao, a spokesman for the Chinese consulate in New York, says, "I want to reaffirm that China is committed to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of foreign companies in our country."
