When presidential nominee John McCain chose Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, as his running mate in 2008, he galvanized the Republican base and demonstrated once again his propensity for being a maverick. But once the results were finalized on the night of Nov. 4, 2008, the two Republicans were forced to concede and Palin found herself on a plane headed back to Alaska.
