An officer in the Soviet Union's GRU foreign-military-intelligence service, he convinced the CIA and British intelligence agents of his desire to supply them with high-value information in 1962. Code-named Agent Hero" Penkovsky detailed the Soviet nuclear-arsenal capabilities for the West and leaked plans to install missiles in Cuba ahead of the missile crisis. Soviet intelligence tipped off by American double agent Jack Dunlap arrested, tried and executed Penkovsky for treason in 1963
