An officer in the Soviet Union's GRU foreign-military-intelligence service, he convinced the CIA and British intelligence agents of his desire to supply them with high-value information in 1962. Code-named Agent Hero" Penkovsky detailed the Soviet nuclear-arsenal capabilities for the West and leaked plans to install missiles in Cuba ahead of the missile crisis. Soviet intelligence — tipped off by American double agent Jack Dunlap — arrested, tried and executed Penkovsky for treason in 1963
