The general's name is now synonymous with treason, but before he was a traitor, Arnold was a hero of the American Revolution, famously helping the Continental forces best the British at the Battle of Saratoga. Ego and avarice turned Arnold against his fellow countrymen after a court-martial and an allegation of fraud. The general plotted and failed to surrender the fort at West Point to the redcoats for £6,000, a £360-a-year pension and a command in the British army
