Two other photos in Pelosi's office hold special places. One shows 7-year-old Nancy, in white gloves and a crown-like headband of tulle, holding the Bible as her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., is sworn in as mayor in front of Baltimore City Hall in 1947. The other is of D'Alesandro beaming beside his daughter from his wheelchair four decades later, two months before his death, on the day she first took her own oath of office as a member of the United States House of Representatives.
