Assassinating a Presidential Candidate
Luis Carlos Galán, a journalist turned politician, angrily denounced the cartels. When he reportedly found out that Escobar was a member of his party, he ostracized him from the organization — and became a target. Shown here with his son Juan Manuel in a visit to Rome, he vied for the presidency of Colombia twice, in 1982 and 1989. Escobar ordered the assassination of Galán, and he was killed by hitmen on Aug. 18, 1989.
