Killing the Justice Minister
In 1984 Colombia's Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara, shown here on vacation with his two sons, was one of the few crusaders against the country's $5 billion–a-year cocaine industry. In April 1984, on the streets of Bogotá, two young hit men, apparently on orders from Escobar, rode a red Yamaha motorcycle up alongside Lara's white Mercedes and pumped seven bullets into him. One of Lara's sons, also named Rodrigo, was just 8 at the time but helped bodyguards bring his bullet-riddled father to the hospital. The killing helped turn popular sentiment in Colombia against the drug lord.
