In the space of nine days in the fall of 2009, at least three major oil fires broke out around the world, extracting a high human and environmental toll. The fire on this oil rig in the Timor Sea started on Oct. 30 when workers attempted to plug a leak that had spilled thousands of barrels of oil into the sea.
