The thriving business of scrap metal has contributed tens of billions of dollars to the U.S. balance of trade each year. The record highs being paid for steel and aluminum has even contributed to a rise in thefts in some communities of cemetery ornaments, plumbing pipe, gutters and even manhole covers.
