The first celebrity to emerge from the modern bodybuilding circuit was Steve Reeves, a winner of both the Mr. Universe and Mr. America titles. Reeves, photographed above hoisting actresses Debbie Reynolds and Jane Powell, would go on to a career in film, playing characters like Hercules, Goliath and other brawny heroes.
