Heroin's Global Reach
The Growing Fields
Afghanistan produces about 90% of the world's supply of the poppies that are used to make heroin and opium. According to the U.N., the country produced 8,200 tons of opium in 2007. It is estimated that the money from this trade provides the Taliban with about 70% of its funding. The remainder of the world's supply comes from Burma, Thailand, Laos, Colombia and Mexico.
