The Original Winnie
Christopher Robin named his teddy Winnie after a bear that lived in the London Zoo. The bear was given to the zoo by a Canadian officer, Harry Colebourne, who, it is said, bought her from a hunter for $20 and named her Winnie in honor of his hometown, Winnipeg. Colebourne, above with his pet, left Winnie in the zoo's care when he was called to duty in France, and she lived there until her death in 1934.
