The Bridge On The River Kwai, 1957
David Lean's epic, while a work of fiction, is based on the construction of the Burma Railway by Western prisoners of war in 1942-43. Alec Guinness won an Oscar for his portrayal of a British Colonel so consumed with completing the bridge that he forgets its essential purpose: to extend the reach of the Japanese enemy.
